WEEK 2

Ideation & Literature Review

We began with ideation for our chemical product and were introduced to the literature review and its relevance. We were informed that we can refer to the various types of references from the past year FYP reports from the alumni and peer-reviewed journals.

Qusyaie suggests the idea of using waste cooking oil to plan, as people use cooking oil to cook but it can use up at least 3-4 times after that they will throw it into the sink. It is not as safe as used cooking oil and if it is used after the recommended date, it would be considered carcinogenic and more acidic. Furthermore, used cooking oil can also lead to health issues such as obesity, weight gain and diabetes.

For the first idea, I came up with an idea that could use cooking oil in a hydrogen fuel cell. It is a renewable source as some vehicles are using a fuel cell to power up instead of using fossil fuels. It is also environmentally friendly. The process of extracting hydrogen from used cooking oil is by using transesterification. We then ask our teacher if it a good idea. As our teacher thinks that our idea is very hard as we have to a huge amount of formula to use and use it to create it. Then we started to think about the question.

Some of the questions we think of:

1. Will it be effective for us?

2. Is it cost-efficient for consumers?

3. Something that helps you, our friends and our family members?

4. Can it be easily accessible for consumers to bring it anywhere?

After asking ourselves these three questions, we decided to change our minds as it was a huge amount of work and to think of the formula to create. Therefore, we still use the idea of using the waste cooking oil but instead, we make equipment to filter out the waste cooking oil to clean cooking so it uses more than 4-6 times. In conclusion, we decided to make equipment as our chemical product.
