WEEK 12
Product Development 2 - 3D Printing
This week, we were introduced to Digital Fabrication. It is fast becoming an important enabling technology in a wide range of chemical engineering applications. Digital Fabrication is good for prototyping as it allows the physical evaluation of the design, performs functional testing before committing to a full production run, and prints numerous design iterations to identify and remove errors before production.
Digital Fabrication is also good for end-use parts as it allows extend the lifespan of older equipment by printing obsolete parts, reverse engineer spare parts and customisable high value or low volume end-use production. Tools and jigs are not required.
ACTIVITY
Next, we are tasked to develop the teaching materials for a designated topic. We are supposed to carry out the literature review to gather the required materials, discuss with the group what materials to use and prepare a deck of slides for a 10-15 mins sharing. For our group, we had to research what is additive manufacturing (AM), its advantages and its applications. Briefly describe the operating principle of each type, the strength and limitations of the 3D printing technology (FDM, SLA, SLS)
After our class has done sharing their short presentation. We then did an MCQ quiz on Blackboard to assess our understanding of 3D printing. The teacher went through the MCQ and the lesson is ended..
