Cardboard Joinery

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

On week 12, We were scheduled to meet for pre-session preparation to research and write a brief summary of Corrugated fiberboard.

We attended our 3rd practical and learned the fundamental techniques and tools required to make cardboard buildings and machines using Corrugated Fibreboard. We were tasked to creating a visual board displaying at least eight different ways to join cardboards together. There were already six types of joinery provided, so we needed to find two more to incorporate on our board.

Before we began creating our cardboard joinery board, we were informed of FabLab's safety measures. We also learned how to cut cardboard boxes correctly by watching videos and finally get to start on it.

Since the minimum was eight, we managed to do ten cardboard attachments. We were having fun so our group decided to create more. Slots, tabs & slots, gussets, flange, tabs, score & bend were the six main joineries. We added the L brace, brass fastener, stacking, stack n spin and external insert as part of our visual board. We got more than eight ideas because we decided to google other interesting shapes that can be real-world applications.

To conclude the session, we presented the class a mini-presentation on our cardboard joinery, explaining the uses as well as our favourite one. Our favourite one was the stack n spin since it was the hardest to cut and very useful in the future.

THE LITTLE ASSIGNMENT

Lastly, we were tasked to try to assemble the winged unicorn at home. There is a video available on how to assemble the unicorn.

While assembling, I observe a few types of folds and joints.

We also try ways to allow the wings to return to its starting position. But is not that perfect.

The video below is Seri's idea
